Tropical peatlands in their natural state support peat swamp forest. Human activities have resulted in the reduction in area, and degradation of natural tropical peat swamp forest. Pressures have included the extraction of products and services and agricultural development to meet increased demands for food. Conservation of tropical peatlands in a near natural state remains among the most important local and global issues. The Crop Research Division aims to deliver solutions to balance the need for peatland development and conservation as well as improve the state of degraded tropical peatlands.

Functions:
  1. To promote restoration of degraded tropical peatlands.
  2. To promote an agronomic approach in the sustainable management of tropical peatlands for agriculture.
